There is nothing … nothing … that I do not love about the Northumberland coastline. From the cliffs, to the dunes, from the wild waves and enormous tidal shifts, to the castles that dot the horizon, I love this area of the world. For one small second, captured here on Spittal’s beach, I sensed the coastline smiling back at me.
The bleached and eroded pebbled and shell fragment work together to create a foil for the sparkling sand. And oh, how it sparkled yesterday!

Not quite a closed form, though. This might irk some geometry teachers that I know.
As if the sand and pebbles on Spittal Beach are not colorful enough, this bit of turquoise sea glass on the tide line added to the beauty. And the bubbles that remained from the last wash of the tide? An added surprise!
This delicate, damp feather seemed to spoon the pebble, graceful even after its usefulness has waned.

Pink is dominant, but it is the luminous quality of the yellow rock in the sun that is most striking.
It is unusual to find a scallop shell of any sort on our beach. This one’s a beauty, and beside the mussel shells it really shined.
The summer of 2014 is officially here with the start of Memorial Day weekend (here in the US). Have picnics and barbecues, and enjoy the outdoors – beach, mountain, lake, park, and backyard. Most of all, make memories with family and friends this season. The memories that are made, and the stories that retell them, serve as a glue that can bind hearts and generations.
Oh, and remember to look for the little treasures that may be at your feet.
