The sun was perfectly positioned to enhance the blues, both light and deep, in these mussels. Their accidental clustering by the outgoing tide created a well-balanced and attractive arrangement. Not too bad for mollusks that are, in themselves, extraordinarily ugly!
Downy bits of feather and a sugar-crust delicate shell were arranged just perfectly for an understated still life. Understated, but absolutely elegant.
Yes, it was really this blue. There are no rainbows on the interior of this variety of mussel – just brilliant, ocean blue. Just another one of God’s little surprises.
I am not sure how this survived the ferocity of the surf to make it to the tide line. I love how the fairly young mussel has found itself attached to something that is almost unidentifiable as once living. Barnacles? … Continue reading
